Kitikmeot Corporation and Cementation Canada (North Bay, Ontario) signed a unanimous shareholder agreement to form a new company, Kitikmeot Cementation Mining & Development (KCMD), on Tuesday, April 26th, 2005.

The Press Release which announces the formation of this company, providing comments by the Presidents of both companies, is available here.

The new company has significant Inuit ownership and participation, and aims to create a platform for continuous training and development of the skills and capacities of aboriginal and Northern people in the areas of underground mining and safety. The new company will focus on the growth of the underground mining industry in Nunavut and the North West Territories.

Objectives in Establishing this Joint Venture Company
The establishment of KCMD allows both Kitikmeot Corporation and Cementation Canada, through the new joint venture company, to capitalize on existing and future mining opportunities flowing from the growing diamond and metal mining industries in the Northwest Territories and Nunavut.

Kitikmeot Cementation Mining and Development will facilitate the development of these new markets and ensure that training/employment opportunities, and associated business capacities, are developed for Kitikmeot Inuit, as well as for other aboriginals and northerners.

Current Contracts

KCMD is active at the Diavik Diamond Mine (located in the NWT) where we recently completed a multi-year contract for the construction of underground exploratory declines. We are now very involved in underground production at that site, and look forward to a continuous, extended relationship with Diavik/Rio Tinto.

A second site, which had been a more recent development, was with Newmont Mining at the Hope Bay site. This site is located in the Kitikmeot Region, on Inuit-owned land. Newmont's objective had been the development of a major gold mine, beginning with Doris North. KCMD was under contract to carry out the underground mine development for the project. Work began in October, 2010, but more recently Newmont announced that the project would be placed on care and maintenance. As such, KCMD has now demobilized from the Hope Bay site. Hope Bay remains a world class gold deposit, and we are hopeful that KCMD will resume work at the site at some point in the future.
