Polarnet is a wholly-owned division of Kitikmeot Corporation,
providing internet services to the Kitikmeot Region of Nunavut
(services to 5 remote communities). |
| Polarnet was established in 1997, and was the first internet
service in Nunavut that provided local dial-up services to remote
communities (all located in the Kitikmeot Region). Prior to this,
and as still is the case for many communities in Nunavut, internet
connectivity was only available through long-distance dial-up.
This made access to the world wide web prohibitive, due to high
cost and poor performance. |
| |
Polarnet was the original Internet Service Provider fo the Kitikmeot Region, and now a partner in the Nunavut Broadband Corporation, that provides high-speed internet to Nunavut. This
consortium consists of SSI Micro out of Yellowknife, Polarnet,
Sakku Arctic Technologies (Rankin Inlet), Nunanet Communications
(Iqaluit), and Sanny Internet Services (Sanikiluaq).
