PolarNet is an Internet Service Provider that has in operated in the Kitikmeot region since 1998. Through a partnership between Kitikmeot Corporation and SSi Micro Ltd, Polarnet became an early technology innovator in the north, making the Kitikmeot region the only region in Nunavut to provide local dial-up internet.
In 2005, the Qiniq network was established by the Nunavut Broadband Development Corporation, with SSi Micro serving as the technical partner and network operator. Under this new technology deployment, staff from KIA and KC-PolarNet were assigned roles as Community Service Providers (CSPs), providing front line support to Qiniq customers in the Kitikmeot communities by signing up new accounts, taking payments and providing technical support. PolarNet is gradually transferring its regional CSP responsibilities to local, independent contractors, with the exception of Cambridge Bay, which will continue to be served directly by KC-PolarNet staff.
