Kitikmeot Corporation is the economic development
arm of the Kitikmeot Inuit Association, and is responsible for
developing business opportunities that will build an economic
base in the Kitikmeot Region of Nunavut.
By developing profitable
businesses (including the formation of various joint-ventures
with corporations from across Canada, as well as globally), we
are able to foster a number of training and employment opportunities
for the Inuit of the Kitikmeot Region of Nunavut. |
 |
|
| |
| We work with a number of other organizations in the Kitikmeot
Region and Nunavut, in initiating and implementing various training
programs, as well as employment opportunities in a number of
industries. |
| |
| The principles upon which the Corporation is based
include: |
| |
1. |
Developing profitable businesses to sustain the
Corporation; |
| |
2. |
Returning profits and cash to its shareholder, the Kitikmeot
Inuit Association, and therefore to Inuit beneficiaries of the
Kitikmeot Region; |
| |
3. |
Developing employment and training opportunities for Inuit
of the Kitikmeot and other Regions; and |
| |
4. |
Assisting smaller, entrepreneurial businesses to develop and
flourish. |
| |
| While the third objective noted above specifically
mentions employment and training, each of the others indirectly
can foster these opportunities. |
| |
| For example by developing profitable businesses,
these profits can be utilized to fund various training initiatives,
or finance other business startups that will provide these opportunities. |
| |
| And by assisting smaller businesses to develop
and flourish, our beneficiaries benefit from the job-creating
potential that the small business sector is known for. |
| |
| Kitikmeot Corporation funds the “Kitikmeot
Business Assistance Program” (KBAP) that provides equity
and/or debt financing for Inuit business startups in our Region. |
| |
| The “Nunavut Sivummut Program”, funded
through NTI (Nunavut Tunngavik Incorporated), also provides funding
for this purpose. |
| |
| These programs are administered by the Kitikmeot
Economic Development Commission, outlined in more detail
below. Contact numbers are provided on their website. |
| |
| Kitikmeot Corporation has a Human Resource Department which closely followed our mandate by searching and developing employment and training opportunities through our joint venture companies. This also extends to businesses wishing to develop or compete in our region. More details on our Human Resources Department is outlined in the section below. |
| |
| Kitikmeot Economic Development Commission |
| The Kitikmeot Economic Development Commission (KEDC)
and Kitikmeot Corporation work very closely together in initiating
and implementing Aboriginal training programs for the Kitikmeot
Inuit. |
| |
| KEDC is the economic development arm of the Kitikmeot
Inuit Association (KIA), serving Nunavut Land Claims beneficiaries
in the Kitikmeot region of Nunavut. |
| |
First established in 1990 under the NWT Societies
Act as the Kitikmeot Regional Community Economic Development
Organization or “Kitikmeot Regional CEDO”, the Commission’s
mandate (as defined by KIA) is to improve and promote the economic
status and self-reliance of Inuit and Inuit communities in the
Kitikmeot
region of Nunavut. |
| |
| KEDC offers a number of Aboriginal training programs,
for example, providing classroom and on-the-job training to assist
unemployed individuals to obtain skills and training needed to
enter and stay in the workforce, and providing assistance to
employers to cover costs of training or retraining their employees. |
| |
| KEDC also administers the Kitikmeot Business Assistance
Program (KBAP) and the Nunavut Sivummut Program (NS). As a result
of funding provided under these programs, primarily for business
startup or expansion, training and employment opportunities are
made available to the Inuit of our Region. |
| |

|
The Kitikmeot Corporation Human Resources Department closely follows our mandate by searching and developing employment and training opportunities through our joint venture companies. This also extends to businesses wishing to develop or compete in our region. |
